A Study on Fatigue and Circadian Type among Night Shift Nurses in the Hospitals

Abstract
This study was conducted to find out the relationship of degree of fatigue and circadian type of nurs s who were doing rotating shift work. The data were gathered from 78 nurses at two hospitals during t e period of Oct 23 to Nov 30, 1987. In order to measure the subjective symptoms of fatigue, the investigat i r applied the application form of fatigue, designed by Labor and Health Institute of Japan to the subie is until their night duty was over for six days. The evaluation form of fatigue contains three symptom-; physical, mental and neurosensory fatigue with 10 items each. At sixth day circadian type in strumen was applied on them.
The results of this study were analysed as follows.
1. Until night shift work was over, frequency of fatigue was increasing more and more.
2. The general type was I dominant type by the order of physical, neurosensory, and mental fatigue 3. The time they felt highest fatigue during night work was 4 O¢¥clock (30.8%) and 5 O¢¥clock (33.3%). 4. According to the time they felt highest fatigue on second and sixth work day showed significant rela
tionship.
5. According to their circadian type, degree of fatigue on first work day showed significant relationsip. 6. According to the ward they are working, degree of fatigue on sixth work day showed siginificant relationship.
7. According to the duration of employment, degree of fatigueon first work day showed significant relationship.
The results seem to yield the following conclusions;
The weekly rotating shift system should be reconsidered for a better adaptation for the day duty after the night duty based on the results of the examination of the degree of fatigue for six days their night duty continued.
